I sculpted a raw vase that looks as if it were discovered in some archaeological excavation from the Roman period. I decided to name it “Larva Antiqua,” an ancient spirit that connects the distant past with the present. This vase resonates with the spirit of Roman mythology, especially with the figures of the “Lares” and “Penates” – the spirits who protect the home and family. These deities were believed to be the guardians of the hearth, preserving the well-being of families throughout the ages. They were the unseen protectors, always present, even when invisible.

This vase, with its raw, unglazed texture, feels like an ancient relic, an object telling a story from a different time, connected to the earth and the material. Its twisting, plant-like form emerging from a torch symbolizes the continuity of life and its protection. The organic, plant-inspired motif of the vase represents the ongoing flow of life and the capacity to continue evolving, just as the Lares and Penates protected families and remained steadfast even during times of change and travel.

This work draws inspiration from the past but also looks forward – to the quiet yet powerful presence of those guardians who were always around, always present, always watching over
